Tom Thompson is the former Director of Disability Services and ADA Coordinator at Harper College and worked after retirement as a Grants Specialist in the College’s Educational Foundation/Development office. Tom services roles including serving on three accreditation committees, chairing a Crusade of Mercy fund raising campaign for three years, teaching as an adjunct faculty member and helping to endow scholarship programs for students with disabilities. In his former role as the Director of Access and Disability Services at Harper College, he facilitated the creation of support programs for students who are deaf/hard of hearing and for students with learning disabilities. Both of these programs won state and national awards for their effectiveness with students.  He also helped develop assistive technology resources and a specialized lab. More recently, he promoted the development of educational support for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (whose student population grew from 5 to 50).
Currently Tom is serving as Interim Director of California State University – Fullerton and he served as Interim Director of the Disability Resource Center at Northern Illinois University for the Spring 2014 semester. In 2013 – 2014, Tom was working as a consultant with a community college, evaluating and re-designing Disability Services to better utilize existing resources and to meet future needs.  He also worked with another community college to design curricula and administrative materials for a program for students with intellectual disabilities. He has conducted external reviews of Disability Services at over 20 colleges. He has twice served on the Board of the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD).
