Blurb Description

The Friends for Life Conference Conference in Orlando, Florida from July 16-21, 2019, brings together clinicians, researchers, physicians, adults, children, and families affected by diabetes to learn the most current information in diabetes care.

CDN chooses its NextGen young adults to attend diabetes conferences to represent the young adult voice in the sector and gain experience in their desired career fields. While at conferences, these young adults are able to attend sessions, network with those in the diabetes sector, and connect with mentors. At this year’s conference, these students will be on two panels speaking about the transition to adult life, one with a parent audience and one with a peer audience.

Title
Melissa Bucklin
Description

Melissa is a rising senior at the University of Rochester studying biology with a minor in public health (epidemiology). She became involved in the CDN Chapter at the University of Rochester during her freshman year because she saw the gaps that exist in the diabetes community. While she does not have diabetes, her sister Hannah was diagnosed when she was six years old. As a sibling, she continues to look up to her sister and acknowledges the many hardships that come with T1D, which is why she’s remained involved as an advocate in the diabetes community.

The past academic year Melissa served as the co-president of the University of Rochester's CDN Chapter, after training as vice-president the year before. Post-graduation she has aspirations of entering the medical field with a specific interest in pediatrics.
