Paid Position: Summer Camp Counselor with Diabetes and/or Insulin Pump Experience — Summer 2013

Camp Laurel, Maine

Background:
We are a private, residential children’s camp in Maine and this year will have a 14 year-old camper (female), and 15 year-old camper (male) who each wear an insulin pump to manage their diabetes. Both campers will be attending Camp Laurel for the seven week season.  The camp is a leading camp in the U.S. – however, it is not a diabetes camp. We are currently looking for a full-time male and full-time female who can serve as a general counselor in these camper’s cabins at camp.

The position runs from mid-June through late August (including a one week Staff Orientation.)

Both campers are very active and social. They test blood glucose levels frequently to maintain activity level and keep good control.

Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate must be at least 19 years old, hardworking, and extremely responsible. The person must enjoy working with kids and have a desire to work at a summer camp. The person must have knowledge of diabetes and how to manage it.  A candidate that already wears an insulin pump would be ideal (Medtronic/Minimed, Animas, Omnipod, Disetronic, or any leading brand). It is not a mandatory requirement for the candidate to be a pump user. For example, we will consider a candidate whose regimen includes frequent injections or a candidate with a sibling that has diabetes.

Written by: Dani Petrunich, CDN Student Blogger (and Intern!) This week’s post is dedicated to all the Dads out there—particularly to the Dads of diabetic kids—and to my own father—thank you for all that you do. Written by: Dani Petrunich, CDN Student Blogger Last Tuesday, I woke up at 6:15 am to catch the 7:49 train into Boston. 6:15 was significantly earlier than my usual wake-up time, which generally fell somewhere between 10:30 am and noon, but I was too excited to care. I got out of bed after my first [...]
